Firefighters responded to the call at 6:06 p.m. after a neighbor reported smoke coming from a third-floor apartment inside the seven-story Edendale complex at 123 Valentine Lane.
It took a crew of 38 firefighters roughly 20 minutes to get the blaze under control. They were able to contain it to the single apartment, Assistant Fire Chief Greg Kantor said.
The two residents living in the unit were not home when the fire began and would not be able to return as a result of the damage. Four residents in the apartment below were also displaced as a result of water damage, Kantor said.
The Yonkers Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross were working to help the displaced residents find temporary shelter.
One woman in a neighboring apartment was treated after complaining of smoke inhalation. A firefighter also suffered a minor knee injury while extinguishing the blaze, Kantor said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
