“The people were very lucky they were home to call it in or they may have lost their home,” said Assistant Fire Chief Greg Kantor. “It was going good in basement. It got real hot down there.”

The fire started just before 9 a.m. in a utility closet in the finished basement of the two-story home at 64 Linn Ave. The family was home at the time and escaped unharmed. Kantor said firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the basement and it was extinguished in roughly 25 minutes.

Kantor said firefighters traced the cause of the fire to a lamp in the storage closet, but it was unclear exactly how it ignited.

“It was burnt so much we couldn’t determine whether the lamp was faulty or if it had just fallen over,” he said.

The house sustained minor smoke and water damage, but the family would not have to relocate, Kantor said. No firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze.
