YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers firefighters battled of pair of blazes Sunday morning on the east side of the city.

The first fire erupted at a three-story home on the corner of Shawnee Avenue and Cherokee Road around 5:10 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved, with heavy fire on all three floors, Deputy Chief John Flynn said.

Eight fire companies and 37 firefighters managed to contain the blaze but not before the building, which is currently vacant and undergoing renovations, was heavily damaged, possibly totally destroyed, Flynn said.

A fire company remained on scene to monitor the smoldering structure, Flynn said.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but no injuries were reported.

The second call came in just after 9 a.m. when an apartment at 900 Palmer Road went up in flames.

Flynn said eight companies and 37 firefighters responded to this blaze as well and were quickly able to get it under control, containing it to the single apartment.

The apartment was heavily damaged, Flynn said, but no injuries were reported. The cause is still under investigation.
