Firefighters responded at 8:52 p.m. to reports of smoke in the area of Odell and Warburton avenues, Assistant Fire Chief Robert Capurso said.

Roughly five minutes later, crews from Engine 308 located the fire at an abandon two-story, wood and stone structure at 35 Odell Ave.

By the time firefighters arrived, the building was too heavily involved for firefighters to enter.  Instead, crews were fighting the blaze from the outside of the building.

Around 10 p.m., 54 firefighters were still working to get the blaze under control, using a ladder that extended into the tree tops to spray water down onto the bright orange flames that poured out of the building.

“Our primary concern at this point, because the building is vacant, is the safety of the firefighters,” Capurso said.

It is unclear exactly what type of building the structure was but it is likely more than 100 years old, he said.

No injuries were reported, the chief said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
