At about 1:05 p.m. Thursday, Lt. Robert Clarke and firefighters Jason Minichino, Jorge Portillo, and Anthony Quintano responded to an Elliott Avenue residence where a woman was giving birth, said Yonkers Fire Department Chief of Operations Robert Capurso in a press release.
The firefighters could see the baby’s head, but the child was not crying and turning blue when the mother was attempting to deliver her, Capurso said.
Officials discovered the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck; Clark held the child’s head while Quintano placed a finger between the baby’s neck and the umbilical cord.
The baby immediately started crying.
Firefighters suctioned the baby’s nose and mouth, then unwrapped the umbilical cord from the baby’s neck so the child could be fully delivered, Capurso said.
Paramedics then arrived and took over, he said.
