The fire was reported shortly after 3 p.m. at 500 Riverdale Ave., a seven-story building.

There were reports of fire on the third and fourth floors of the building.

Caroline Sherwin, American Red Cross spokeswoman, said they responded to help three families displaced by the fire. The three families include three adults and six children, she said. An initial report said six apartments were affected, but was then reduced to three.

Sherwin said the number of those affected could still change as of Sunday evening, calling it an evolving scene.

The county office of emergency management planned to identify a temporary reception center where Red Cross volunteers could asses each affected family’s situation and “meet their immediate needs and get them on the road to recovery,” Sherwin said.

"We’re grateful, especially on Father’s Day, to have our OEM partners out in the field," she said.
