The week, which began Sunday, May 11, pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. The week's events will continue through Saturday, May 17.

K-9 demonstrations, precinct open houses and Community Affairs unit events will take place throughout the week.

"I congratulate all the men and women of our Yonkers police for their continued service to our city," said Mayor Mike Spano. "Yonkers is one of the safest cities of its size in the country, and that is the direct result of the valor and commitment demonstrated by the department each and every day. Police Week is a chance for us to pay tribute to those honorable officers who have laid the foundation to the safe quality of life of our Yonkers residents."

Fifteen Yonkers police officers have lost their lives dating to 1904, and their names are inscribed on a memorial in Untermyer Park, according to a press release.

“As National Police Week events unfold around the country this week, I would like to thank all the members of the Yonkers Police Department for the work that they do every day in helping to keep our community safe," said Police Commissioner Charles Gardner. "The decrease in crime here in Yonkers over the last few years is a result of their hard work and determination. Police Week gives us an opportunity to reflect on those who serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Yonkers Police Department.”
