WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A 54-year-old Yonkers woman, who was trapped in a home on William Street during a fire, died at a local hospital Thursday, according to the Yonkers Police Department.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 11 a.m. at 7 William St., in the Nodine neighborhood, to find smoke coming from the basement area of the two-story home, fire department officials said.

Firefighters pulled the woman, who did not live at the home, from the burning building and administered CPR before she was transported to the hospital according to fire officials.

Detectives from the Yonkers Police Fire Investigation Unit, Major Case Unit, and Crime Scene Unit are actively investigating this incident and the cause of the fire, interviewing witnesses, canvassing the scene, and processing forensic evidence, said Yonkers Police said Sgt. Dean Politopoulos.

The identity of the victim will not be released pending family notification. No other injuries were reported, but several families were displaced by heavy smoke damage to the home.

This was the second major fire of the day for Yonkers' firefighters who also battled a large blaze at the Ginsburg Development Companies' new 1177@Greyston complex about 40 minutes before the call came in for the Williams Street fire.
