The unidentified trooper was taken to Westchester Medical Center after he slammed into a tree and skidded into a home at 302 Bradhurst Ave., around 6:42 p.m. Saturday.

State police declined to release any more information, saying the incident is still under investigation and the trooper was on duty at the time of the crash.

Katherine Laurence, who was visiting her brother-in-law, homeowner Robert Sarlo, at the time of the accident, said the pair heard a “tremendous bang.”

“Both of us jumped off our chairs,” she said Sunday. “I was thinking my brother-in-law got hurt and he thought I dropped something heavy. Then we saw trooper’s lights out on the street.”

After rushing outside, they saw the trooper being helped out of the car before being taken away in an ambulance.  Laurence said she had been told the officer was driving one of two state police cars responding to a call when he was cut off and skidded off the road.

After smashing into a front yard tree, the car collided with the home.

“Certainly if he hadn’t hit the tree he probably would’ve come right through the dining room,” the California woman said Sunday. “We couldn’t believe it. We stood there in awe.”

The front end of the trooper’s car was crumpled and was towed away from the house around 7:45 p.m. While the century-old home suffered some minor damage, Laurence said she was thankful there were no serious injuries.

“You can always repair a house but if somebody is killed or seriously injured you can’t replace that,” she said.
