The fire broke out at 27 Bruce Ave. at about 10:45 a.m. with a very heavy smoke condition in the building reported, Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick said.

The two occupants were rescued by Ladder 74 and E 304 from Radford Street, Fitzpatrick said. Both were transported to Jacobi Hospital with smoke inhalation.

The fire in the basement was quickly extinguished.

The possible cause of the fire was a lithium battery from an electric bike, Fitzpatrick said, noting the cause remains under investigation.
