Rafael Vasquez, 25, of Hartford, allegedly stole a Honda Civic while in New York Tuesday, and then refused to stop for officials from multiple law enforcement agencies, police said.

During the high-speed chase, which went through Bridgeport, Westport, Fairfield, Stratford, and Trumbull, Vasquez caused at least four two-car accidents, according to police.

Vasquez caused another two-vehicle accident in Trumbull, which caused the stolen car to spin out of control and hit a guardrail, police said.

Authorities had tried unsuccessfully to use stop sticks to apprehend Vasquez, and finally were able to trap him with Trumbull Police Department cruisers, according to state police.

Vasquez tried again to escape but was “boxed in” and crashed into a Trumbull police car, state police said.

Vasquez was charged with assault on a public safety officer, engaging police in pursuit, interfering with an officer, evading and causing physical injury or property damage, larceny, criminal trover damage to a motor vehicle, reckless driving, and driving without a license, police said.

Vasquez is being held on a $50,000 bond, Bridgeport court records show.
