FORT LEE, N.J. -- A trucker created his own bogus license plate to avoid higher tolls, said police who arrested him at the George Washington Bridge.

Port Authority police who spotted the plate stopped a 2006 Freightliner driven by 27-year-old Danquan J. Smith of North Carolina at the upper-level tolls early Thursday, the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

"The truck had an EZPass tag that was registered for a class1 truck, instead of a class5, enabling it to illegally pass through the tolls at a lower toll rate," he said.

Smith gave the officer a Texas driver's license -- even though he lives in Maple Hill, NC -- and a registration that didn't match the bogus Illinois license plate, Pentangelo said.

It turned out the plate "was fabricated out of laminated plastic," he said.

SMith was charged with theft of services, tampering with public records, toll evasion, having a fictitious license plate and failing to observe a traffic sign.
