YONKERS, N.Y. - The Yonkers Police Department has launched an investigation into an armed man that reportedly approached a teenage girl in her car while wearing a black ski mask and allegedly attempted to rob her.

On Friday, Yonkers Police Det. Lt. Patrick McCormack announced that his department had launched an extensive investigation in the 1st Precinct after a woman reported the attempted robbery and sexual assault, prompting a strong police response.

According to police, shortly after 7:45 p.m. on Thursday, a 19-year-old Yonkers resident was approached while sitting in her vehicle on Pennsylvania Avenue by the suspect, who was dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask.

The suspect made entry into the passenger side of the vehicle and produced a handgun before fleeing the area on foot, police said.

The incident prompted an extensive search of the area by uniformed officers, K-9 Units and the Westchester County Aviation Unit to no avail. According to McCormack, the Detective Division is actively investigating the incident.

Police have increased patrols in the 1st Precinct and will be giving the area “special attention,” following the incident. Anyone with information can contact detectives by calling (914) 377-7724.
