YONKERS, N.Y. -  One person was killed and nearly 100 residents were forced out in the cold as a four-alarm fire that tore through a Yonkers apartment building on early Wednesday morning.

The IAFF Local 628 Yonkers Firefighters stated that one civilian fatality had been reported, which has been confirmed. No information on other injuries has been released, though there were reports of residents leaving on stretchers.

Firefighters were dispatched to a six-story Hawley Terrace apartment building at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15. Hours later, all members were still working the scene, with an assist from crews from New Rochelle, Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Fitzpatrick said, noting that the weather conditions - including wind gusts and snow mounds - were complicating their efforts.

The fire was mostly contained to the fifth and sixth floors. Officials noted that firefighters had difficulty accessing the building and trouble with water pressure at hydrants.

Yonkers police have warned motorists to avoid Odell Avenue, North Broadway and Warburton Avenue, as firefighters continue to work at the scene, which was compromised by this week's wild winter weather. The American Red Cross has set up a temporary shelter at the nearby Yonkers Police Athletic League Center on North Broadway, where volunteers were helping the displaced residents.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
