The fire, a 5 South Broadway, was reported at 11 p.m. Thursday in a row of stores that includes a McDonald's and 99-cent store.

St John’s Church, which is adjacent to the stores, sustained some smoke damage, but was saved from any fire damage, Yonkers officials said.

Early in this fire the church was in serious jeopardy of catching fire, the officials said.

Numerous other businesses sustained smoke and water damage.

The fire was still not under control at 5 a.m., but companies were "making progress," the Yonkers Fire Department reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
