On Friday, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino announced that Dontae Degree, 20, was found guilty by a jury trial for a 2015 shooting that left one man dead and another seriously injured in Yonkers.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2015, gunshots rang out in front of a Morningside Avenue apartment complex in Yonkers, prompting a nearby police officer to investigate the scene, Scarpino said. It was there that he discovered Degree’s two victims sitting in the front seat of a Hyundai.

According to Scarpino, Degree “crept up behind the car occupied by his victims and fired multiple shots at them.” The man in the passenger seat was killed, while the driver suffered serious injuries.

The passenger was shot in his head, neck and spinal cord. The driver was struck in the head, right shoulder and back. He was taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and survived. The shooting kicked off an investigation by Yonkers police and Degree was ultimately tracked down and arrested on Oct. 19, 2015.

Degree is scheduled to be sentenced on Tuesday, May 30, where he will face a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison.
