WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Police have recovered a hammer that may have been used to ransack and intentionally damage a Scarsdale home that was due to be auctioned off later this month.

Police were dispatched to a Palmer Avenue home after a resident reported a case of burglary and criminal mischief.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a woman, her son and a family friend who told police that her family had recently been evicted from their Palmer Avenue home and had moved to a new location.

The home had been scheduled to be auctioned off on Sept. 27.

Police said that the woman told officers that she had returned to the Palmer Avenue property to collect some possessions on Aug. 21 and found that someone had entered the home and intentionally damaged it, including several “smashed sinks, toilets, bath tubs, counters and walls."

During an exterior check of the property, police found several open windows and no sign of forced entry. Officers said that they also found water running throughout the interior of the home, with all sinks, toilets and bathtubs left intentionally clogged and running.

Crews from the Scarsdale Fire Department and Con Edison were brought to the scene, and firefighters were able to shut down the running water at the main. During the subsequent investigation of the home, police found a hammer, which may have been used in the commission of the crime.

Detectives from the Scarsdale Police Department are currently investigating the incident.
