Greenburgh Cops: KKK Fliers A 'Very Distasteful Prank'

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Greenburgh police have identified KKK recruiting fliers posted at a hotel used for Mercy College student-housing as a hoax, calling the posters a "very distasteful prank."

Greenburgh police say the KKK recruitment flier that included the contact information for Mercy College men's lacrosse players was a hoax, and that the lacrosse players are victims in the matter.

The fliers, reading "the Ku Klux Klan Wants You," were distributed at the Westchester Marriott Hotel in Tarrytown on Nov. 30 and have since sparked a hot issue at the Mercy College campus, whose officials cooperated with Greenburgh police and are conducting their own separate internal investigation on the matter.

After investigation, the incident was most likely the result of two parties of students at odds with each other, said Greenburgh Police Department Commanding Officer Lt. Brian Ryan.

"As of now, it was just a very distasteful prank. There doesn't seem to be a racial element to this — rather, a very distasteful use of that racial symbol," Ryan said.

The poster included the names of three Mercy College men's lacrosse players as contacts and stated that a KKK meeting would take place on Dec. 1 at the men's off-campus Dobbs Ferry house. But Ryan said the mentioned students were the victims in the case, and it was one of those three men who filed a police report regarding the incident.

"The three young men were actually victims. They have no affiliation with any white supremacist group or the KKK," Ryan said.

Police are still looking into possible suspects on the issue and said that those responsible could be charged with aggravated harassment, a misdemeanor.

Mercy College is also looking to take action against the author of the flier, and released a statement Thursday that the college "has zero tolerance for insensitive and disturbing behavior. Mercy College's Code of Conduct specifies offensive material cannot be posted anywhere."
