Both remained hospitalized at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx early Wednesday afternoon, the girl with second-degree burns to her face and the father with what firefighters Tuesday called relatively minor injuries.
Neither of the individual’s injuries is expected to be life-threatening, fire officials said.
The girl was sleeping in her crib just after 7 p.m. Tuesday when a fire erupted in the bedroom of a multi-family home at 363 Walnut St. The father was able to rescue the child and had taken her from the house by the time firefighters arrived three minutes later.
About 40 firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the bedroom of the first-floor unit and the fire was declared under control at 7:17 p.m.
On Wednesday morning, crews who were working to board up the windows said the family who lived in the home would likely not be able to return for some time. However, the occupants of the building's other six apartments were not displaced.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Assistant Chief John Darcy said he did not believe it was suspicious.
