At approximately 5 a.m., New Rochelle firefighters responded to the 77 Centre Ave. when flames broke out on the third floor, prompting more than 60 people to flee onto the snowy street.
Firefighters were able to able to contain the flames to the room the blaze broke out, but several surrounding apartment units suffered varying degree of smoke damage. Fire investigators are still determining the source of the fire, though it is reportedly not suspected to be suspicious.
In all, six residents were sent to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, with one sustaining a minor burn. The Red Cross currently has volunteers assisting the residents, though until the investigation is complete, it cannot be determined how many families will be temporarily displaced.
