Over the past few weeks, Bronxville police have been searching for a suspect or suspects– enlisting the help of departments in nearby municipalities – after there has been a string of residential break-ins throughout the village.

The streak of illegal activity spread to Scarsdale over the holiday weekend, when Bryan Mitchell, a homeless man, was caught attempting to rob a Fox Meadow home before he was apprehended in Edgemont on Sunday afternoon.

According to Scarsdale Police Chief Andrew Matturro, the homeowners “heard a noise in an attached sunroom,” before she spotted Mitchell, who fled on foot immediately upon being discovered. He was arrested with a large amount of jewelry and a screwdriver in his possession.

“Scarsdale patrol units responded to the area within two minutes and broadcast the event and a description of the suspect to area police departments,” he said. “Several minutes later, the Greenburgh Police Department advised that they were detaining a suspect just over the line in Hartsdale, who had just completed a burglary of a residence and was detained by the homeowner there.”

Law enforcement officials in Bronxville got into a footrace of their own over the long weekend, apprehending a suspect and arresting him for unlawfully entering two vehicles parked in a Sturgis Road driveway early on Monday morning. Police are continuing to investigate whether the incident is related to a May 21 burglary on Homesdale Road.

Since stepping up officer patrols following three home burglaries in May, the Bronxville police have apprehended several suspects. On Friday, May 22, they arrested three individuals that were in possession of stolen vehicles following a pair of vehicle pursuits.

The arrests on Friday are not believed to be connected to the recent string of burglaries in the area. It is also believed that the Scarsdale burglary is separate from the recent Bronxville burglaries.

“We have worked closely with the Scarsdale and Greenburgh Police Departments after a recent arrest for burglary in their jurisdictions,” Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale noted. “We do not believe that their subject is connected to our burglaries.”

Despite the increased patrols, investigating officers and detectives are continuing to hunt for the burglary suspects, with the public’s help. According to Satriale, they have seen an increased number of false alarms and increased usage of interior and exterior lights as residents become more mindful of the burglaries.

“Many more residents are activating their alarm systems which is an encouraging sign,” he said. “Please make sure alarm systems are registered and permits up to date. Many new activations have been from systems that have been expired. We will not be issuing appearance tickets for these violations, but please renew permits online or at the police department.”
