On Wednesday, police announced that shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, Mount Vernon resident Michael Quarshire, 23, drove the wrong way up the Rumsey Road ramp on the Saw Mill River Parkway, heading north into the southbound lanes.

While Quarshire was driving the wrong way, his vehicle struck a Mercedes Benz - driven by an unidentified woman - that was heading in the opposite direction. Both drivers were able to exit their vehicles before Quartshire’s car burst into flames.

The roadway was temporarily closed, but crews had the scene cleared after approximately two hours.

According to officials, the woman was injured and transported to Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville, where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries. No tickets were issued as a result of the crash, and drugs or alcohol are not believed to have factored into the crash.
