Today I was proud to join Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer, Empire State Development President & CEO Ken Adams and Kawasaki Rail Car CEO Hiroki Iwasaki to announce the approval of a $500,000 State grant that will help Kawasaki purchase the $25 million plant in Downtown Yonkers which it currently leases.

The grant, made possible by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and secured with the help of our State Delegation, will keep Kawasaki and nearly 400 jobs at the Yonkers facility. It’s a big win for our City, our growing Downtown Waterfront, and the men and women who work at the plant. It also sends a message to the business community in Yonkers and beyond: we’re a great city to invest in.

Kawasaki remains at the cornerstone of economic development in Downtown Yonkers – after all, they came downtown 25 years ago when many other companies were leaving. They’ve witnessed the revitalization of our waterfront and their decision to purchase the plant is a testament to the economic vitality and growth of our City. It is an investment in our people and our future.

I want to thank Gov. Andrew Cuomo for continuing to invest in Yonkers and I look forward to continuing to partner with our friends at Kawasaki. And the next time you’re on the train, take pride in the fact that it was likely Made in Yonkers.
