Yonkers Police Detective Frank David Fernandez Dies At 45

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers Police Department Detective Frank David Fernandez died on Sunday, Feb. 14. He was 45.

Det. Frank Fernandez was shaved bald at an event to raise money to assist children with cancer. According to the department's Facebook post, this was "something very typical of him to participate in throughout the years."

He died in an off-duty collision with a Yonkers firetruck, which was responding to a call.

Born in Cuba, Fernandez graduated from Lincoln High School. He was a proud member of the Yonkers Police Department for over 15 years, serving as a detective for the last eight years.

"The entire Yonkers community mourns the loss of Det. Frank Fernandez," Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said in a statement. "A 15-year veteran of the Department, Frank was a dedicated officer, husband and father. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fernandez family."

He is survived by his wife, Alex Fernandez; children David and Daniel; parents Nazael and Nuvia (Garcia) Fernandez; brother Nazael "Sid" Fernandez; and nephews Anthony, Nicholas and Andrew.

Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and from 2-9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., in Yonkers. A mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church on Friday, Feb. 19. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
