Rita Gross-Nelson, 77, Of Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Rita Gross-Nelson, 77, of Yonkers, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, after a brief battle with cancer.

She was the daughter of Edmund O. and Aurelia Austin. She was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a retired Yonkers police officer, holding the distinction of being the first African-American woman hired to the department. She was also the court liaison for the Yonkers Board of Education.

She is survived by daughters Maria Gross George, Celleste Gross Gilbert and Carol Gross; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters.

She was predeceased by her parents and one granddaughter.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 3 from 4-9 p.m. at the Andre F. Baker Funeral Home, 18 Yosemite Ave., White Plains. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at Community Baptist Church, 156 N. Broadway, Yonkers. Burial will take place at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers.
