Peter Maynich, 93, Lifelong Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. — Lifelong Yonkers resident Peter Maynich died Tuesday, May 10. He was 93.

A native of Smirkovic, Poland, Maynich narrowly escaped Nazi invasion at age 15, becoming a helmsman in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Maynich was the owner and operator of the Riverdale Valley Bar & Restaurant for 28 years with his wife, Mary "Mae," Zagursky. 

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church. 

Maynich is survived by his daughter, Sonia Ruesseler and her husband Volker, his daughter, Diane Pena, his son, Peter Maynich and his wife Yarka, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

Maynich was predeceased by his wife, Mary Maynich, his parents, Aftanazy and Eufrozya, his grandson, Raymond Pena and his grandson Nickolas Ruesseler. 

Visiting hours will be from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Whalen & Ball Funeral Home. 

Parastas service will be at 3:45 p.m. Sunday.

Divine Liturgy will be at 10 a.m.  Monday in St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church. 

Entombment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
