Nicola 'Nick' Gionta, 84, Yonkers Resident

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers resident Nicola "Nick" Gionta died Tuesday, Jan. 19. He was 84.

Born in Italy, Gionta immigrated to Argentina when he was 17. There, he learned what would become his life's work, the trade of master diesel mechanic. He moved on to Toronto, before finally settling in New York.

Gionta opened his own truck repair shop, NV Truck & Equipment Repairs in Mount Vernon, which he ran with his sons. He had a successful business for 25 years, until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Anna; son Nick Jr. and wife Pamela; daughter Margaret Cerrone and her husband Luciano; and grandchildren Stefanie, Jessica, Nicholas, Giulia and Danielle.

Gionta was predeceased by his son John.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Friday morning, Jan. 22, at St. Barnabas Church. Entombment was in Rosewood Mausoleum at Radcliffe Cemetery. The Sinatra Memorial Home in Yonkers assisted with arrangements.
