Mary Hayden, 67, Yonkers Native

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Mary Ellen Hayden, of Ridgewood died Tuesday, Nov. 3. from injuries following an automobile accident five days earlier. She was 67.

She was born on July 24, 1948 to Joseph F. and Katherine Ryan in Yonkers, N.Y. 

After graduating from Ridgewood High School, Hayden attended Boston University on an academic scholarship from 1966 to 1969. She earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now UMass-Dartmouth). 

Hayden received a master of science in community health nursing from Boston University. She attended on a full scholarship while raising two young daughters. 

After working throughout Cape Cod, she transitioned to a career in rehabilitation case management and started Hayden Case Management. She worked as a hospice educator and trained staff on end of life care before her retirement.

She actively participated in sports throughout her life. She tried out for the 1966 Olympic kayaking team along with her sister Joan. 

Hayden is survived by husband Bob, whom she married in 1968, her two daughters, Amanda and Jessica, and their respective husbands Christopher McHugh and Edward Petrush. 

She is also survived by her brother Douglas Ryan and wife Lillian and her three sisters Joan Krilla of Mahwah, N.J.; Brigid Ryan of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and Patricia Hunt and husband Richard of Apex, N.C., and four grandchildren.
