John S. Whearty, 82, Retired Westchester Schools Superintendent

VALHALLA, N.Y. — Valhalla resident John S. Whearty died on Thursday, May 12. He was 82.

He was born on April 17, 1934 to James and Gertrude Whearty in Glen Cove, N.Y. 

Whearty was the first principal of Westlake High School, starting in the fall of 1962 before later becoming Superintendent of Schools of the Mount Pleasant Central School District, retiring after 34 years of service in 1996. 

He was a member of the Valhalla United Methodist Church, the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club, Mt. Pleasant Community Theater and various professional Organizations. 

Whearty is survived by his wife, Joan (White) Whearty and by his daughters, Noel Whearty and Merry Thomas and her husband Jon and his grandchildren, Justin and Nichole Thomas.

John Whearty, Jr., who died in 1994, was predeceased by his two brothers, Robert and James Whearty.. 

Visitation will be at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 West Stevens Ave., in Hawthorne on Friday, May 13, from 4-8 p.m. 

The funeral service, will be held at Valhalla United Methodist Church, 200 Columbus Ave., in Valhalla on Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m. 

Interment to follow at Kensico Cemetery, in Valhalla.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Whearty's name may be made to Valhalla United Methodist Church, 200 Columbus Ave. Valhalla, N.Y. 10595.
