YONKERS, N.Y. -- John Joseph Whelan died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at Saratoga (N.Y.) Hospital.
Born to John and Catherine Whelan, he was raised in Yonkers and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He graduated in 1959 from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. with a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting.
Following his marriage in Yonkers to the former Lois Sneider in 1960, they moved to Pleasantville, N.Y., while he worked as business manager for Rye City School District.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Paul Roberts of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and a daughter, Barbara Ann Whelan of Saratoga Springs, two grandchildren, Emily Roberts and John Mihalek, and a sister, Margaret Burke of Yonkers, N.Y.
Whelan devoted his spare time to his community through the Pleasantville Volunteer Fire Department on Patrol 7.
While retired in upstate New York, he was a member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and the Saratoga Wilton B.P.O. Elks Lodge 161.
He was a lifelong fan of University of Notre Dame football.
A communicant and usher at St. Clement’s Roman Catholic Church, he also served as a member of St. Clement’s Regional Catholic School board of directors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Clement’s Church, at a date and time to be announced in the near future. Burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
There are no calling hours and in lieu of flowers, his family has requested contributions may be made in his name to St. Clement’s Regional Catholic School, 231 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs, N.Y., 12866.
