Born and raised in Yonkers to the late Frank and Ida Kar, he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1937. He was an accomplished violinist and played for the Yonkers Symphony Orchestra as a young man. He worked for the Caltex Petroleum Corp. for 45 years and retired to Cape Cod in 1985. Kar served in the Army during World War II in the Philippines. He received the American Service Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Service Star.
Upon retiring to the Cape, he began another 20 year-hobby "career" as a watchmaker for Guerten Bros. Jewelers and as a gate attendant for Ocean Edge Resort.
Skip is survived by his wife of 65 years, Terry; a daughter, Jackie; son-in-law, Michael; and two grandsons, Sean and Andrew. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 8, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Nickerson Funeral Home in Orleans, Mass. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at Our Lady of the Cape Church in Brewster at 2 p.m. A private burial will be held at the National Cemetery in Bourne, Mass.
