Douglas Alvarez of Mamaroneck, a freshman defenseman on the SUNY  Cobleskill men's soccer team, died as a result of injuries in the Interstate 88 crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. in the town of Maryland near Exit 18 in Otsego County, about 25 miles west of SUNY Cobleskill. Five other SUNY Cobleskill students who were occupants in the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The vehicle, which was traveling eastbound toward Cobleskill, exited the roadway and rolled over several times after entering the center median before it came to a stop in the westbound land, where it was hit by another vehicle, according to state police.

Alvarez, who was ejected from the vehicle, was transported to Albany Medical Center and later succumbed to his injuries, according to state police.

Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 28 at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home on 767 E. Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck. There will be a funeral mass beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Vito’s - Most Holy Trinity R.C. Church on Underhill Avenue, followed by an interment at Greenwood Union Cemetary.

Memorial donations can be sent to the Alvarez family’s GoFundMe fundraising page, which has nearly quadrupled its stated $7,000 goal as of Wednesday, April 26.
