Frank J. Schweizer, 92, Of Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Frank J. Schweizer, 92, lifelong resident of Yonkers, died Friday, May 29.

Born Oct. 15, 1922, he was the son of Frank J. Schweizer Sr. and Irene (Bourdeax) Schweizer.

He attended Yonkers schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School, where he played varsity basketball.

As a member of Boy Scout Troop 100, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He managed a youth group of 14-16-year-olds in baseball and was elected president of the Bryn Mawr Boys Club.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program in 1942. In July 1945, he graduated as a second lieutenant and was assigned to Alamagordo, N.M., as an instructor on B-29 bombers until being shipped to Tinian Island, a part of the Mariana Islands. He flew B-29 combat missions over Japan as the bombardier until the end of World War II.

Upon his discharge, he settled in Yonkers and was employed with the New York Engineering Co. for 30 years.

On July 16, 1944, he married his longtime high school sweetheart Matilda Shepley at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers. They recently celebrated 71 years together.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, William and Robert; one granddaughter; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren and a sister, Irene (Pinkey) Bartik.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, from 10-11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Church, Palmer Road, Yonkers. Entombment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
