YONKERS, N.Y. - Fr. Thomas Murphy of Yonkers died July 12. He was 72.
Fr. Murphy was born on Aug. 11, 1941, in Brooklyn, and was the son of Thomas and Frances White-Murphy. He attended P.S. 147 and St. Catherine grammar schools in St. Albans [1947 to 50]; Sacred Heart, Cambria Heights [1950 to 55] and Glenclyffe High School, Garrison [1955 to 1959]. He entered the Capuchins in 1962; professed perpetual vows in 1968 and was ordained to the priesthood June 5, 1971. He received his BA in Philosophy from St. Anthony College, Hudson, N.H., ; Bachelor of Divinity from Capuchin Theological Seminary, Garrison ; Master of Arts from Maryknoll School of Theology, Ossining ; and Master of Science in Education .
Fr. Murphy served as a parochial assistant at several Capuchin parishes: Our Lady Queen of Angels in Harlem, [1971 to 73; 1975 to 76; and 1982 to 86]; San Antonio, Rio Piedras, PR [1974 to 75]; St. Michael, Brooklyn [1976 to 78]; and St. John the Baptist, NYC [1980 to 82].
He was a hospital chaplain at the Veterans Hospital, Northport [1978 to 80]. He remained a chaplain for the rest of his life: Kateri Nursing Home, New York City [1986 to 89] and St. Joseph Medical Center and Nursing Home, Yonkers [1990 to 2013]. He resided with the Capuchin fraternity of Sacred Heart Friary in Yonkers.
Fr. Murphy is survived by his sisters, Denise Gregoretti of North Massapequa, and Pat Golding of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and brother, Brian Murphy of Yonkers.
Calling hours are Tuesday, July 15 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, NY 10703. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 16 at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for the care of the senior friars at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, New York 10703.
