Father John Proppe, 94, Of Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. — The Rev. John Proppe, of Yonkers, died Tuesday, March 31, at St. John's Riverside Hospital. He was 94.

Father Proppe was born on Dec. 19, 1920, in New York City. He entered the Capuchin Friarhood in 1939, pronounced his perpetual vows on Aug. 27, 1943, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1947.

He spent 20 years as a missionary in the Ryukyu Islands and the Marianas Islands, returning to the U.S. in 1970.

Proppe worked as a parochial assistant in New York City and Middletown, Conn., upon his return and began working as a health care chaplain in 1973. His work would take him across the state for the next 28 years, eventually entering the senior community of St. Clare Friary in 2001.

He is survived by a nephew, Robert and his wife, Lois, of Middletown; and a niece, Susan of Hampton Bays, .

A viewing will be held at St. Clare Friary, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, April 6.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers, on Tuesday, April 7, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Clare Friary are gratefully accepted.
