Earl Simmons, 87, Speech Teacher, of Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Earl F. Simmons, a lifelong Yonkers resident, died July 15. He was 87.  

Simmons was born in Amsterdam, N.Y. to Anna and Frank Simmons. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and graduated from Syracuse University. He received a master's degree from Hunter College and taught theater and speech at Long Island University for 25 years. 

Prior to his teaching career, Simmons was a character actor in many theater productions, including several roles on Broadway. He volunteered at Montessori P.S. 27 in Yonkers, teaching young children to read. He was an avid sports fan and he also loved to play competitive Scrabble. 

His wife, Laura DeLillo Simmons, predeceased him.

He is survived by two nieces, Ruth A. Rice and Jeanne Schwabe; and a nephew, Michael DeLillo.  

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, at Flynn Memorial Home in Yonkers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, at St. Mary's Church in Yonkers. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
