David Kenney, 94, Lifelong Yonkers Resident, WWII Vet

YONKERS, N.Y. – David J. Kenney, a lifelong Yonkers resident, died Dec. 22. He was 94.

Born March 7, 1918, he was the son of David and Mary Connors Kenney. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and graduated from Saunders Trade School. During the Great Depression, he worked as a caddy at local golf courses and began his enduring love of the sport.

Kenney played baseball with the Redwing Club and worked at Alexander Smith Carpet Mills before joining the Army. He served in the Third Army in France and Germany as a medic and participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of the Nordhausen Concentration Camp.

After World War II, he worked as a machinist at Anaconda Wire and Cable Company. On Nov. 6, 1948, he married Loyola Ryan. In the mid-60s, Kenney joined IBM, where he worked in security and facilities management.

He served as a Little League umpire and member of the Holy Name and Nocturnal Adoration Societies at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart. He was an active member of the Amackassin Club, the Alan F. Waite American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1666.

Kenney was predeceased by his wife; three sisters, Loretta, Catherine and Hannah; and a brother, Richard. He is survived four children, Chris (Kevin O'Rourke), Susan (Michael) Henry, David (Barbara) and Maura (Greg) Rast; a sister, Florence Lues; five grandchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Whalen and Ball Funeral Home in Yonkers. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart. Burial will follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sacred Heart Steeple Fund.
