YONKERS, N.Y.- A water main break in the city of Yonkers continues to snarl traffic for morning commuters.
The Saw Mill River Parkway, southbound from Rumsey Road, and the Cross County Parkway, west of the New York State Thruway, remained closed Tuesday morning, causing bumper to bumper traffic on some of the other parkways in the area.
Commuters and residents are urged to avoid the area and its side roads until the water main break is repaired.
Sue Stepp, spokeswoman for the states Department of Transportation, said Tuesday morning the state had representatives on site who were monitoring the situation.
Our main concern is to get the road back open, she said, adding there was no timetable yet available for when traffic may return to normal.
Stepp advised motorists to check 511ny.org to get an idea of what the status of major highways are around the area.
We are updating as we go, she said.
Yonkers police are advising motorists to take the Bronx River Parkway, Hutchinson Parkway, New York State Thruway or I-95 as alternative routes through the city.
On Monday, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said a private contractor accidentally broke a 30-inch water main that borders the Saw Mill River Parkway, near Wendover Road, while installing fiber-optic cables around 12:30 p.m.
The break flooded the parkway and left about 50,000 Yonkers residents with limited or no water service. On Monday night, the mayor said it was expected to take 24-48 hours to fix the break.
