YONKERS, N.Y. Less than two weeks after bringing a 38-foot steel beam from the wreckage of the World Trade Center to Yonkers, city officials are set to display that beam in a Sept. 11 memorial.
On Tuesday, the eleventh anniversary of the attacks, Yonkers will unveil its Sept. 11 memorial at 7:30 p.m. inside Conor Park, on the corner of Central Park and McLean avenues. While city officials have yet to say exactly how the 4,000-pound beam will be displayed or exactly what the memorial will look like, they say the hope is it will serve as a source of consolation, as well as a teaching tool.
I hope it becomes a place for families to come and to find at least some comfort, Mayor Mike Spano said last month when he announced the city's plan. I hope its a place for kids to come and to learn and to know that if we dont learn from our history, we will repeat it.
Draped with an American flag and escorted by a fleet of Yonkers police officers, the 4,000-pound beam arrived in Yonkers on the back of a semi-truck last month after being given to the city by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
At the time, Spano said it was an important, yet solemn reminder of the events of 11 years ago.
This is a sad, sad piece of history, Spano said. People know that when they touch it, that something happened that day, something real.
Tuesdays ceremony will be the second Sept. 11 event in the city this week. On Sunday, city officials and representatives from Yonkers uniformed services hosted a memorial service on the Yonkers waterfront.
There, Spano unveiled a plaque remembering all 24 Yonkers residents who died in the attacks.
