YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District (BID) is hoping when you think of fine-dining, you'll think of Yonkers.

Several of Yonkers premiere dining locations are offering 20-percent lunch discounts and 25-percent dinner discounts for Yonkers International Restaurant Week, which began Monday, Feb 3 and ends Sunday, Feb. 9.

Daniel Lipka, executive director of Yonkers BID, said he hopes the event encourages people to come to downtown Yonkers and experience the "wonderful restaurants they might not normally go to."

"We hope to entice people not just from Yonkers, but from all over Westchester to come," he said. "It's a pretty significant discount at almost every sit-down restaurant in downtown Yonkers."

According to Lipka, the timing was picked purposely because this time of year is generally considered off-season for the waterfront restaurants.

"We also want people to see that there's a lot more businesses here now, it's safer, et cetera. If you look at the history of Getty Square, it used to be trendy and posh like Scarsdale," he said.

He added, however, that over the last ten years, there has been a slow and steady improvement.

As for the restaurant list, the high end restaurants exhibit diversity and culture. Their styles range from elegant to casual and fun.

"The amount of International food is something unique about this area," Lipka said. "You go from traditional Italian, to seafood, to Cuban, Indian, Mexican and Latin. It really has a little bit of everything."

He added that the restaurants are particularly authentic, yet also creative in their presentation.

"You don't have to be from the country to appreciate the food, but those who are from the country will appreciate it as well," he said.

Even if you don't know what you want to eat, he hopes you come anyway.

"Walk around and find something you'll really like," he said.

Those interested in attending Yonkers Restaurant Week should print out the certificate on the website to redeem at the restaurants.
