YONKERS, N.Y. -- The Afya Foundation has been providing desperately needed donated medical supplies and equipment to Africa from its Yonkers warehouse, since 2007. With the recent outbreak of Ebola in West Africa, Afya says their need has never been greater.
“Ebola has a 90 percent mortality rate so proactive preventative measures is the best defense to stop the spread,” reads Afya’s website.
Afya says that there will be 30,000 cases of Ebola in West Africa and only a small number of health-care works and adequate supplies to treat them.
“Your generous donation will allow doctors and nurses to care for people infected with Ebola and stop the spread,” Afya’s site says.
In addition to collecting medical supplies and equipment from hospital groups, doctor offices and corporations, Afya collects donations to help fund shipping and other costs. The non-profit organization also seeks volunteers who can help sort donated supplies in its warehouse at 140 Saw Mill River Road, Yonkers.
Afya is currently working on putting together a 120,000-pound shipment of surgical gowns, masks gloves and other items in conjunction with the Ministry of Health to be sent to Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.
“As the number of cases sharply increases in Sierra Leone, we are dedicating all our resources to meet the tremendous demand for emergency supplies in country,” Afya’s site says.
So far, Afya’s already shipped 15,192 pounds of supplies to Liberia and Sierra Leone and estimates their current donations from national corporations and other entities to be worth more than $1.7 million. The non-profit organization is currently seeking funding to airlift the supplies to Freetown
To bring awareness to their efforts to stop the spread of Ebola through donations of needed supplies for African health-care workers, Afya teamed up with Strawberry Frog on a video urging people to make a donation.
The video showing children asking “What are you going to do to prevent me from becoming another statistic,” in reference to the five children who came in contact with an Ebola patient in Texas .
The children ask “Please donate to Afya’s Ebola relief effort today. Before it stops us here in the United States.”
