The applicants have proposed that the three mural panels and the buildings onto which they are painted be named the “Richard Haas Mural District.”
If the LPB decides that the murals and the buildings meet specific LPB criteria as a landmark, the application will be sent to the City Council, which under the terms of the Yonkers ordinance makes the final decision on preservation status.
Two informational walking tours of the proposed district will be conducted for the LPB members by the applicants and Haas from 11 a.m.-noon on Saturdays, Feb. 7 and 28. The public is welcome to join the tours to learn more about Haas, the murals and their buildings.
The public will also have an opportunity to weigh in on the pros and cons of preserving the murals and their buildings at the LPB public hearing in the spring.
The general reaction from members of the public and the arts community has been surprise that the murals are not already landmarked, as they are a prominent highlight of the Warburton Avenue/Main Street access and have been held in high regard since the city administration commissioned Haas to design and implement them in 1997.
Haas is renowned for designing his murals in a style that inextricably integrates the actual architectural and decorative elements of the buildings with the artistically created design of the murals. The "Gateway to the Waterfront" murals are an example of this style, as these murals and buildings are as closely united visually as they are physically.
