The City Council voted on Tuesday to pay a settlement of $1.25 million to Irma Marquez for injuries she suffered at the hands of police officer Wayne Simoes, though the city has not admitted any wrongdoing on his part.
Marquez initially sought more than $10 million in a lawsuit filed in 2008. Simoes - now a police sergeant - was prosecuted for the incident, which was caught on camera at LaFonda Restaurant, leading to the settlement nearly a decade later.
According to lohud, Simoes’ defense at trial contended that he did not throw Marquez to the ground, but he instead slipped on a wet bar floor. Marquez suffered a broken jaw and contusions in the incident.
