Yonkers Florists Prepare For Spring Holiday Rush

YONKERS, N.Y. -- April showers bring May flowers, and florists are preparing for some of the biggest days for flower sales over the next few months.

Whether its lilies for Easter or a nice bouquet for mom on Mother's Day, Yonkers florists agree that spring brings no shortage of customers. The weather, however, might bring a shortage of flowers.

Carl Weinberg, Yonkers resident and owner of Bed of Roses Florist, has seen a good amount of traffic in his store, but volatile weather conditions have greatly impacted his stock.

"The change in weather has kind of curtailed the spring start, but hopefully with the good weekend it should start to propel business upwards," he said.

He said a snowstorm just a day before Valentine's Day was very bad for his business, and that created a ripple effect throughout the months ahead.

"We had a very quiet late winter early spring. You have to kind of do extra business to make up for that," he said.

The state of the market during Easter is usually a pretty good indicator of how it will be on Mother's Day, which is a huge sale day for their store and all florists.

According to Weinberg, Easter lilies, centerpieces and ceramic sets are very popular during the Easter season. Additionally, hydrangeas are big sellers throughout spring.

Mimi Peters-Davis, co-owner of Fly Me To The Moon Florists, hasn't felt the same kind of strain. In fact, she is in the middle of outfitting a wedding.

"We're a floral boutique, so we sell a lot of unique flowers. We've been getting lots of special projects and walk-ins," she said.

According to Peters-Davis, this time of year is particularly good for bright, colorful flowers.

"We aren't doing any specials for Easter, but we're a great place for people looking to get a unique centerpiece or arrangement," she said.
