A crew from Engine 307 helped deliver a healthy baby girl Friday morning during an emergency child delivery, Fire Chief John Flynn said.
Firefighters received the call at 5:19 a.m. as a woman was going into labor. The expectant mother told dispatchers she felt the baby coming but didn’t have time to drive to the hospital.
When crews arrived at the apartment four minutes later, they found the woman ready to give birth, Flynn said.
Firefighters helped the mother through the delivery, later suctioning the baby’s airways and cutting the umbilical cord, the fire chief said.
Ambulance crews arrived a short time later and together with firefighters helped care for the mother before taking her to St. John’s Riverside Hospital.
“As far as we can tell, it looks like mother and baby are going to be fine,” Flynn said.
The chief said all firefighters are trained in emergency child delivery and carrying out the task isn't that uncommon. He estimated they perform similar actions several times per year.
