YONKERS, N.Y. – Even though Newtown, Conn., is about 60 miles away, the news of its elementary school shooting has Yonkers and Bronxville residents alarmed and talking about the tragedy.
School shootings should be avoidable, said Gloria Jordan, grandmother of a student at Museum School 25 in Yonkers.
"What needs to happen is. schools need to have an extra set of eyes, whether that means more security or cameras," Jordan said. "The community, parents, caregivers, police and schools need to be more involved with this issue, because things like this will happen without proper attention. A shooting in an elementary school should be avoidable, and my heart goes out to the families of the victims."
The tragedy incited a social media debate on gun rights among Bronxville and Yonkers residents.
On The Bronxville Daily Voice's Facebook page, Jimmy Hill wrote, "There are kindergarten kids involved. It is being reported at least 27 people were killed including 10 kids. When will the madness stop?? The second amendment was written at a different time in American history and was put in place for protection of this country's citizens against a rogue government. It is so sad how that amendment is misunderstood giving anyone the right to own a gun, even if they are mentally unbalanced. Unless a person has a criminal record or a record of mental instability they can purchase a gun. Then there are the illegal guns as well. There is no way to stop the madness."
User lwitherspoon left the following comment on a Daily Voice story in response to the tragedy and the ongoing gun debate:
"Whatever side of the issue of gun control you're on, now is not the time to debate it. Not when there are probably still people waiting to hear if their loved ones are alive."
