The Parkway Road Bridge, which connects Bronxville and Yonkers, has been closed to traffic since June 2013, when members of the state Department of Transportation forced village officials to close it after it was deemed a hazard during a routine inspection.
The bridge originally was scheduled to be opened as early as April of this year, but village officials were forced to reject the only two bids they received from contractors because they were too costly, stalling the project.
According to Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin, work has resumed at the bridge after accepting a bid of nearly $450,000 from the Arben Group developers in the second round of bids. While it might not be readily clear to the public, steelwork is underway on the underside of the bridge.
Earlier this year, the village enlisted a Manhattan-based contracting company to determine the scope of the project, which originally was valued at approximately $200,000, which would be divided between Eastchester, Bronxville and the Yonkers. However, the initial bids that were sent in each were for at least $500,000, with one nearing $1 million.
The Parkway Road Bridge was a source of frustration in the village for years before the state DOT officially closed it. It intermittently was closed to traffic several times in 2012, including a lengthy stretch when a nearby water main broke and flooded the area, damaging the road surface.
Since then, village officials have said they were aware of the gradual deterioration in the years before the DOT inspection, but the arguments about money forced the delays, leading to its eventual closure.
