“The Late Show with David Letterman” made its debut on Aug. 30, 1993. Since then, the show has won nine Emmy Awards and received 73 Emmy nominations. Letterman’s first stint with late night took place on Feb. 1, 1982 with the premier of NBC’s “Late Night with David Letterman,” which aired for more than 11 years and received five Emmys.

As of May 20, 2015, Letterman will have hosted 6,028 total episodes of both Late Night and Late Show.

During a taping of the Late Show on April 3, 2013, Letterman surprised all – even the network, when he revealed he would be retiring in 2015.

Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” will take over the Late Show after Letterman says farewell to late night TV.
