WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Artie James of Dobbs Ferry usually gets his morning cup of coffee at a local deli before going to his job in the Bronx, but he stopped at McDonald's in nearby Yonkers for a free cup Monday.
"I saw the sign for a free coffee and came in to see what I had to do to get one," James said. "We don't have McDonald's the Rivertowns. I'm not a big McDonald's guy, but they do have pretty good coffee. I'm running to get to work, so this is a nice way to start the day."
The Golden Arches are offering customers a free coffee from March 31 through Sunday, April 13 -- from 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. -- in its first free coffee event. All McDonald’s nationwide are offering a free small cup of McDonald’s Premium Roast McCafé coffee with no purchase necessary.
The company promotion says that if everyone from Westchester Country were to claim a free McDonald’s coffee, that would be approximately 968,802 cups according to U.S. Census data.
Rob Ramirez of Yonkers was skeptical of the word "free."
"Nothing is free," Ramirez joked. "You usually have to buy something. But this is true. I liked it, so I bought a large too. I usually do to Nick's Diner (in Yonkers). I guess this is a nice thing to do for the customers."
Wayne (no last name), who lives in Yonkers, said he found out he had a free coffee coming when he arrived to have a breakfast.
"The coffee is good, and free is always good," he said.
