Judith Huntington, president of The College of New Rochelle, presented the scholarships to Rachel Guglielmo of White Plains High School and Ariana Silvestre of Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers, both of whom aspire to jobs in social service professions.

Named in honor of Sr. Dorothy Ann Kelly, the 11th president of the college and a Westchester Hall of Fame inductee, the $5,000 merit grant is awarded to students who are  high school leaders within their community.

Recipients must demonstrate academic achievement with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average and score 1,000 or higher on their SAT. The scholarship also includes a room grant, valued at $4,000 annually. Both the scholarship and room grant are renewable for four years as long as the student maintains a 3.0 grade-point average.

Guglielmo earned a 4.02 grade point average, while taking numerous Advanced Placement courses at White Plains High School. She is looking forward to becoming a teacher.

“Academically exceptional, compassionate, and modest in character” are words often used to describe Guglielmo.

She has been a Sunday school teaching assistant since 2012 and has traveled to the Ukraine on a mission trip with other members of her church. She is a sports enthusiast in volleyball, playing on both the junior varsity and varsity teams at White Plains High School and is a member of the Westchester Pride Volleyball Team.

As a student in the Bio-Environmental Magnet program majoring in biology-chemistry, Silvestre’s goal is to be on the Principal’s List at Saunders Trades and Technical High School in Yonkers. At Saunders, she is enrolled in Advanced Placement courses which challenge her to excel. A volunteer at St. Joseph’s Medical Geriatric Day Care and at Osborn Nursing Home, she hopes to pursue a career in nursing.
